Bingo, Bunnies, and Brunch

Take this opportunity to spend an afternoon with your friends for a delicious brunch and a few games of bingo.  Fee includes luncheon, bingo and prizes.  Ages 55 & over.  Pre-registration required.  Registration deadline:  Tuesday, April 15, 2014

Halfway to Halloween

Date:  Friday, April 25, 2014 

Times:  7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. (Trick-or-treating: 7-7:30pm / Movie Start:  7:30pm)

Location:  Oaks Recreation Center Field House (10847 W La Porte Rd)

Here’s your chance to see a movie on the big screen!  Can you guess the movie?  It may take you 101 chances to guess the family friendly classic about love and puppies.  Costumes are optional but bring your trick-or-treat bag to get some goodies.  Admission is $1 and includes a bag of popcorn provided by SBI Mokena. Children ages 2 and under are free.  No outside food/drinks are allowed.  Bring your blankets to lay on the ground and because it might get chilly in the gym!  Open seating will also be available on folding chairs and bleachers.

Chicago Botanical Gardens Trip

Date:  Monday, May 5, 2014 

Times: 9:30a.m. departure - Apprx. 3:30p.m. return

Location:  West Parking Lot, Oaks Recreation & Fitness Center, 10847 La Porte Road

Fee: $59 R/$71 NR (includes motorcoach transportation, tours and lunch)

Deadline: Wednesday, April 23, 2014

We will start the day with a 35-minute narrated tram tour that travels 2.3 miles showing the entire garden grounds: highlights of 81 acres of lakes, 9 garden islands and panoramic views of these beautiful gardens followed by a boxed lunch.  After lunch, we will head into one of the greatest treasures of the Chicago Botanic Garden; The Lenhardt Library. This tour package includes a rare book viewing, a library tour, and an exhibition tour. Established in 1951, the collections of the Lenhardt Library hold approximately 110,000 volumes including books, periodicals, rare books, special collections, videos, DVDs, slides, nursery catalogs, and the archives of the Chicago Horticultural Society with approximately 3,000 titles from the fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries. After the tour, there will be time to stroll through the rest of the Regenstein Center and the surrounding Gardens before our departure.

 

Senior Spelling Bee

Date:  Tuesday, May 6, 2014

Times:  1:00p.m. start (Registration opens at 12:30p.m.)

Location:  Oaks Recreation & Fitness Center – Walnut Room

The Illinois State Senior Spelling Bee competition is an exciting statewide program that provides Illinois adults age 50 and older the opportunity to showcase a lifetime of knowledge and to celebrate years of experience through spelling abilities!

Can you spell palindrome?  Or malapropism?  How about minuscule? Well then grab your honey, and show off your spelling talents at a Senior Spelling Bee. It’s a fun and brain-healthy activity, and it’s FREE!! Local winners and runners up will advance to regional semi-finals.  The State Finals will be held at the Illinois Building at the 2014 Illinois State Fair on Senior Day. Transportation and expenses for those who advance are the responsibility of the winners.

Park Dancers Recital

Location:  Lincoln-Way East High School Fine Arts and Performing Center, 201 Colorado Avenue, Frankfort.

The 2014 Theme is: “50 Years of Favorites” – commemorating Miss Chris’s 50 years of dance!

The Mokena Park District’s talented ballet, tap, and hip-hop/jazz students will tap, twirl, and whirl their way through “50 Years of Favorites”.  Family and friends are invited! Admission is FREE!

 

Woofstock: A Bark in the Park & Pet Parade

Date:  Sunday, May 18, 2014

Times:  1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. (Pet Parade Registration: 1:00 p.m.-1:25 p.m./Woofstock Contest Registration: 1:00 p.m.–1:55 p.m.)

Location:  Main Park-Picnic Grove - 10925 W La Porte Road, Mokena (Parking is free in the Main Park parking lot)

Fee:  Free to participate! 

We will kick-off the event with the Pet Parade which includes a ¼ mile fun walk along the Main Park wooded trail at 1:30 p.m. – Registration begins at 1:00 p.m.  All animals are welcome for the parade.  Parade prizes will be awarded to the top winners in the following categories: Best Dressed, Most Exotic, Most Original, Smallest Pet and Largest Pet!  Costumes are optional! 

Following the parade, there will be a live exotic animal show presented by Jim Nesci’s Cold Blooded Creatures that will begin at approx. 2pm or at the completion of the pet parade awards presentation. After the show, an afternoon of canine contests for our four-legged friends will begin at approx. 2:30 p.m. Start training your pooch now so they can place in our contests:  Woof Off, Look-A-Like, Best Tail Wagger and Hot Dog Relay!  Vendors and give-a-ways will be available throughout the afternoon.  Raffle with great prizes for Kane County Cougars tickets, Zanies Comedy Club tickets and more will also be available for purchase.  Drawing will be held around 3:45pm.  For the safety of your dog and others, please be sure the dog’s vaccinations are current.  All dogs must be on a leash.

Vendor Fees: $20 (by 4 p.m. on Friday, May 23)/ Event Day Vendor Fee: $25

Buyers are admitted FREE!

Sell your old and new wares at these annual Outdoor Flea Market.  We welcome fresh produce, new and used crafts, clothing, tools, etc.  Spend a day selling and swapping.  Groups/organizations welcome.  Concessions will be available for purchase.

-Check-in time for vendors: 6:45 a.m. Vendors that want spaces together must check-in together (NO EXCEPTIONS).  Spaces cannot be reserved for late-comers.

-Any vendor arriving after 8:00 a.m. will be assessed at $10 late fee.

-Buyers admitted free starting at 8:00 a.m.

-Bring your own table, chairs, etc. (15’ X 15’ area provided)

-Seller/s are allowed only one (1) vehicle by their space throughout the event (vehicle must remain after assigned; can not come and go)

-If you park a vehicle and trailer (adding up to 30 ft long) you must purchase two (2) spaces.  Any vehicles and trailers longer will need to purchase the correct amount of spaces as to the length of their vehicles.

-A $5 fee will be charged for each additional vehicle accompanying a seller onto the event grounds to load/unload only. (Vehicle must vacate the selling area prior to 8:00 a.m.)

-Spaces are determined by staff on a first-come, first-serve basis.

-Call the Administration Center in advance if you are planning to sell food or drink items.  Restrictions apply.

-Vendors are allowed to sell fresh produce.

Summertime Stride 5K Run/Walk

Date:  Saturday, June 7, 2014 (rain or shine)

Time:  8:30am 5K Run & Walk start (9:30am Kids Dash start)

Start/Finish Location:  Main Park, 10925 W La Porte Rd, Mokena

Registration times:  7:15am-8:15am at registration tent on event day in Main Park

Registration Fees:  5K Run & Walk:  $20 pre-registration by 5pm on Thursday, June 5; $25 day of event/ Kids Dash (10 and under):  $5 (does not include t-shirt)

Pre-registration: 

1)    By Mail:  Send your completed registration form, signed waiver and payment to the Mokena Community Park District, Attn: Summertime Stride 5K, 10925 LaPorte Rd, Mokena, IL 60448 to be received by June 5. 

2)    Walk-in:  Bring in your completed registration form, signed waiver and payment to the Mokena Community Park District, 10925 W La Porte Rd prior to 5pm on Thursday, June 5.

T-shirt:  Dri-fit t-shirts will be provided to the first 300 paid 5K Run/Walk registrants.  We will make our best efforts to accommodate your preferred t-shirt size. T-shirts are running big!

Event Components:  5K (3.1 mile) USATF-certified course and transponder-timed run and fun walk followed by kids dashes, refreshments, entertainment and an awards ceremony.

Course/Split Times/Water:  The certified course is run out and back primarily on the asphalt paths along La Porte Road in Mokena. Split times & markers and water station will be available on the course. 

Kid’s Dashes:  Registered children 10 and under can participate in kids dashes at approximately 9:30am from the start line.  Kid’s dash distances and heats will vary by age.  All participants will receive a ribbon.  1st Place winners will receive prizes.   

Awards:  An awards ceremony will start after the kids dashes have completed and will include awards to the Best Overall Male and Female run winners as well as the top three winners in the following age categories:  9 & under, 10-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65 & over.

Refreshments/Entertainment:  Refreshments will be available following the run/walk including water, fruit, bagels and more!

Free Concert in the Park - June

Bring your lawn chairs or blankets and come out to enjoy our FREE concert in the park featuring Fire Chicken! In case of inclement weather, please visit our website. The concert is held at Main Park, 10925 W La Porte Road and begins at 7:00p.m. Concessions are open!

Fire Chicken is an entertaining rock and roll band covering all your favorite classic/modern rock, alternative and country hits from the Talking Heads, The Beach Boys and The Commodores to the songs from today. This local band includes five guys playing some great tunes and having a good time.

50 years ago, The Beatles took the United States by storm with their appearance on 'The Ed Sullivan Show.’ B4 and After will offer a sonic experience that encompasses the musical influences “before” The Beatles and journeys well into each individual solo career’s “after” The Beatles.  Not only does B4 and After play the classic Beatle albums that we all know and love, but also have a vast knowledge of early Beatle hits before they made it big.  Not stopping there, B4 and After also venture into the years following The Beatles including classics from the “Band on the Run” album by Paul McCartney, “Double Fantasy” by John Lennon as well as selections from “All Things Must Pass” by George Harrison and “Ringo” by Ringo Starr among many more!
