Summertime Stride 5K - June 4

UPDATED Packet Pick-up Only:  Pre-registrants (registered by June 2) can pick up their bib number with transponder, race packet and *t-shirt at THE MOKENA PARK DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION CENTER, 10925 W, LA PORTE ROAD, MOKENA on Friday, June 3 from 10am-6pm or event day at the registration tent in Willowview Park between 7:30am-8:25am.

*T-shirt: Dri-fit/cooling performance t-shirts will be guaranteed to the pre-registrants of the 5K registered by Wednesday, May 4.  We will make our best efforts to accommodate your preferred t-shirt size. T-shirts are running big!  

Event Components: 5K (3.1 mile) USATF-certified course and transponder-timed run and fun walk followed by kids dashes, refreshments, entertainment and an awards ceremony.

Course/Split Times/Water: The certified course is run out and back primarily on streets throughout Mokena. Split times & markers and water station will be available on the course. 

Kid’s Dashes: Registered children 10 and under can participate in kids dashes at approximately 9:30am from the start/finish line.  Kid’s dash distances and heats will vary by age.  All participants will receive a ribbon/prize. 

Awards: An awards ceremony will start after the kids dashes have completed and will include awards to the Best Overall Male and Female run winners as well as the top three winners in the following age categories:  9 & under, 10-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70+.

Refreshments/Entertainment: Refreshments will be available following the run/walk including Meijer True Goodness Applesauce Pouches, Chick-fil-A of Orland Park chicken sandwiches and superfood sides, Lifeway Kefir, Zone Perfect Bars, Natures Bakery Fig Bars, Hinckley Springs water, fruit, bagels and more! 

Parking: Free parking is available at St. Mary's Church/School at 19515 115th Avenue. 


Directions: (From Chicago) Take 1-57 South to 1-80 West. Exit US-45/LaGrange Road. Turn left and head south to 191st Street. Turn right and travel west about 2 miles to Wolf Road. Turn left and head south to 195th Street, right to 115th Avenue to parking lots.

Starved Rock Trip - June 18

HIKE, LUNCH AND WINE TASTING AT STARVED ROCK, Oglesby IL

Group departs for the hike from the hotel lobby of the Starved Rock Lodge with a knowledgeable guide to see canyons and bluffs made from St. Peter’s Sandstone with a good possibility you will be able to see waterfalls (seasonal). The guide describes to the group how Starved Rock got its name along with other tales and truths. The hike is considered strenuous as there are many stairs and uneven terrain. Please dress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear. Hikes are about 4.5 miles round trip. Outdoor lunch at canyon includes: your choice of turkey, ham or veggie wrap, bag of chips, homemade granola bar, piece of fruit and a bottle of water. After a long day of hiking the trails, come relax in the Lodge lobby and sample some Starved Rock wines (21 and over). The complimentary wine tasting features wines that are made with grapes grown in Illinois. -If you park a vehicle and trailer (adding up to 30 ft long) you must purchase two (2) spaces.  Any vehicles and trailers longer will need to purchase the correct amount of spaces as to the length of their vehicles.

-A $5 fee will be charged for each additional vehicle accompanying a seller to load/unload.

-Spaces are determined by staff on a first-come, first-serve basis.

-All vendors must be selling item/s that individuals can receive on-site at event.

Barker Mansion & Old Lighthouse Museum Tour - July 21

Inspired by the English Victorian manor house, the Barker Mansion and Civic Center stands as a beacon to Michigan City's legacy as an entrepreneurial gateway to the westward growth of the Nation. When first occupied by the Barker family in 1857, the mansion's nod to old world refinement proved the frontier could cultivate taste in a way fitting for pioneering barons. Art, architecture, and opulent décor is just part of what you'll see on the guided tour.  After working up an appetite, we will head to Maxine’s Restaurant who focuses on serving delicious locally sourced ingredients for an enjoyable plated lunch.  Our last tour will be at Michigan City Historical Society’s oldest remaining lighthouse in Indiana, The Old Lighthouse Museum. We will learn about the historic 1858 Michigan City Lighthouse, climb the tower into the lantern room, see a collection of beautiful ship models, learn about the three Michigan City Lighthouses, Abraham Lincoln's funeral train and its stop in Michigan City and much more! Fee includes mini-motorcoach, tours, lunch with tax/gratuity.

Summer Shines Through St. Charles Trip - August 2

We will start with a guided tour at The Fabyan Villa Museum, the former home of George and Nelle Fabyan where we will learn about the scope of their country estate, Riverbank. The home is partially furnished, with some spaces used to display their collections and other estate artifacts. We will then head into the Japanese Garden for a guided tour of this historic landscape site with original & recreated structures, learn about the Japanese garden theory exemplified in the Fabyan garden features and discuss The Fabyan’s estate history related to the Japanese Garden. We will travel for plated lunch at The Office that features outstanding food in a casual but upscale atmosphere. From there, we will tour The Arcada Theatre that dates from 1926 and is one of the historic venues in the Fox Valley followed by our last stop aboard a Mark Twain replica Paddlewheel Riverboat Cruise on the Fox River while enjoying the summer sunshine and summer sights! Fee includes mini-motorcoach, tours (3), lunch with tax/gratuity included and cruise.

Farm & Barn Fest

Held annually in the heart of Mokena at Yunker Farm, the event celebrates the significance of farming life and harvest time in Illinois’ history. Due to the improvements at Yunker Farm and the expansion of The Oaks Recreation & Fitness Center, the event will be temporarily relocated to Main Park.

This unique event gives guests the opportunity to see and experience farm life during 10:00am-5:00pm through entertaining farming demonstrations such as sheep shearing, blacksmithing and more!  In addition, the day is filled with entertainment, delicious food including steam engine corn, kids’ activities and old fashioned contests for kids of all ages.

NFL Punt, Pass, and Kick Contest - September 8

The NFL and USA Football wants every child to be given an equal opportunity to complete.  This program creates a lively and engaging forum for boys and girls to compete separately against their peers in punting, passing, and kicking.  Contest is open to boys and girls divisions as follows:  6-7, 8-9, 10-11, and 12-13 (boys and girls competing separately).  Age is determined as of December 31, 2016.  Top scorer for all the divisions from each Local Competition will advance to the Sectional Competition in October.  Starting June 1, visit www.nflppk.com for more information and to register for this local event.

Ace Race - September 11

Each autumn, disc golfers gather at their local courses for one purpose - to throw aces. Players all throw the same model disc - a brand new, never-seen-before Discraft prototype disc that is introduced each year especially for Ace Race. All participants receive a player's pack that includes 2 prototype discs and other goodies. Your entry fee is only $25, and your player package is guaranteed to be twice that value. There will be at least 36 holes, one throw per hole per player. Depending on the prototype disc, holes will generally be 150 to 225 feet. Player with the most overall aces will win a valuable prize package as well. Players of all ages and abilities are welcome! Pre-registration is a must for this tournament. Deadlines will be adhered to in order to have enough player packages for all.
